How to get noticed by your boss’s boss

‘I am bright, I have good ideas and insights to share, I am also ambitious to take up more but I do not get noticed by my senior leadership team. How can I get attention from my senior leaders?’ - Do you often have a question like this that remains unanswered?

As a people person and with my leadership experience let me walk you through few steps which you can adopt to be recognized by the senior leadership team. If followed, these actions can help you grow and move towards greater opportunities without coming off as a braggart. So let’s get started:

Invest time in learning outside the office: This is one way to show how serious you are with your commitment and your role. This can be taking outside courses, doing LinkedIn Learning, reading features/articles in areas you want to master. For example, you can tell your manager that you are interested in taking up a special project which will help both you and the company reach its goals.

Be a team player: Focus on the team’s success rather than your own. Always remember that we leaders notice those who work collaboratively and support others. Success lies in team working not in individual performance.

Take ownership: Whatever part of the team you own, small or large – you have to know it inside out. Always know your numbers and take ownership of your work. You should always be ready to stand in front of a large group and speak especially in moments when all eyes are on you — such as presentations, meetings, or project reports. Remember that you have to take full responsibility – it can be either – accepting failure or celebrating success.

Stick to your commitment: If you say that you will do something well, ensure you do it well. When opportunities arise we leaders always look for people who are associated with good work.

Train yourself to think strategically: Always try to look beyond your to-do list and try to think strategically. To do this, you have to be able to see the big picture and keep it in mind when making decisions. I know that this does not come naturally but you have to practice it every time. Remember it is a muscle that needs to be exercised.

Challenge old ways and find new ones: Our organization’s tagline is ‘Forward Thinking’, why not imbibe it? I am one of the presenters in GIC and what I have heard our MD saying is “If there is a possibility of doing the same things differently, then do it.” I reiterate the same. We are living in a world of automation and transformation, so it is your job to remain ahead and be future-ready.

Improve your communication skills: You do not have to be the smartest person in the room, but you do need to be thoughtful while interacting with others. Whether you are giving a presentation or working on a group project, I will always advise you to know your audience and prepare how you will communicate with them in advance.

Connect and collaborate: Always build a relationship with people. This is something which I always do and would recommend you the same. If you expand your network your visibility will automatically increase.

Raise your hand: You should never be afraid of asking for opportunities to showcase your skills and talent. Definitely, you should not push too hard but if you see an opportunity where you can become a great asset don’t hesitate to open up.

Always remember that there is no short path to getting noticed. If you focus on these above areas with dedication, patience, and intelligence you will reach your goal. Be resilient and move in the right direction and be ready for the future.
