Leadership Series | Rethinking Efficiently

We all know that 2020 has impacted and disrupted almost all businesses. Starting from the fundamental structure of work to the technology pace and work culture – everything has changed. Now the only way to move forward is to adopt the new normal and come up with a whole new set of possibilities and opportunities. It offers us the chance to rethink what work will look like, rather than return to what it was.

Today if you look around, all companies have to rethink their future direction and GeBBS is no different. So here are few steps that you can adopt to steer up your team during a crisis and emerge even stronger.

Rethink work – With the pandemic today there is a lot of change in the work culture. Definitely, full-time jobs are not going away but yes now work is supplemented by a more flexible, dynamic approach, structured projects, assignments, and tasks. Now our people are more encouraged to focus on innovation and automation. Let’s take an example, earlier marketing jobs would demand one full-time employee who would be responsible for everything - marketing content, public relations, social media, and branding. Whereas today if you look around, the marketing job is broken down into different roles. A social media contractor writes content, brand ambassadors handle awareness, different PR firms are responsible for external branding, and so on. Hence it is very important to focus on your strength and keep improvising it every day.

Rethink workplace and technology – I think for the past 1 year we have been physically separated from our office desk; we are now a remote worker. Workplace 2 years back was not the same, technology did exist, but it did not play such a vital role in our life. Today, work is getting done, and getting done well, and meeting quality standards, all due to technology. Within a year the entire world has become tech-savvy. Talk about zoom, Microsoft teams – people are always connected. I would rather say that the new workplace is more flexible, more variable, and more dispersed.

Rethink talent – While we are breaking jobs into projects and tasks and rethinking workplace and technology, we are constantly in search of the best skills, experience, and expertise that match the needs of our business. We leaders always look around for the right skills. We encourage our employees to make full use of all the training programs that are available within the organization so that they can evolve, grow, and become future-ready. This pandemic has taught us one lesson – ‘a skill which is relevant today, will become obsolete tomorrow.’ Hence it is always important and advisable to keep learning and upgrade constantly.

Reimagine and innovate – This is a world of automation. Workplace automation is everywhere. Today automation is present in all businesses be it small and large, from subtle features in common software applications to more obvious implementation, like self-driving vehicles. But always remember that automation is not a challenge for human beings. Automation is all about implementing a system to complete repetitive, easily replicated tasks without the need for human labor and leaving more time for humans to innovate. So, as a leader, I always recommend to spend more time in creative thinking and innovation, because this is a task that robots can never do.

Rethink soft skills – Competencies like communication, creative thinking, problem-solving, empathy, are never out of demand. These are the skills that will always be relevant and can never be replicated. People often struggle in the workplace not because their hard skills failed them, but because they are unaware of how to bond fast enough, how to align with the right people well enough how to connect with clients effectively enough. So pull up your socks and focus on developing and strengthening your soft skills.

In this ever-changing world, your goal is not just to survive, but to thrive. So to thrive in this digital world always rethink and reinvent and stay ahead of the curve. Always get accustomed to the future trends it will help you to work smarter and work efficiently.
