6 questions to ask before starting a big project | Blog from Vikram Maheshwari

Why do you think that some projects proceed without a hitch, yet others flounder? We all have been taking up various projects and often talk through the bare bones of what we need and what to avoid. But what we often miss during the project initiation process is asking the right questions. So to set up a successful finish, we must emphasize on the type and quality of the questions we ask at the very start.

Here are those 6 questions you should ask when starting a big project:

1.      What can I do at the initial stage to increase the probability of a project’s success?

This question will help you think about the key things to do immediately. Often at the beginning, of a big project, people focus all their efforts on planning. I agree that planning is certainly important, sometimes there are actions other than "to plan" that also needs to be done early like reaching out to people and collating information and so on.

2.      What skills do I need to have to complete this project, and who are the right people to seek help from and coordinate within the team?

You all must have heard the quote of Helen Keller “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Yes, you can never do things alone. And when it comes to handling big projects, you are bound to face this question several times. So, getting the right people with the right skill set is critical. Skills like communication, leadership, team management, time management, problem-solving and risk management are few of the skills that you always need to handle a project.

 3.      How do I influence and persuade my team members to be committed to this big project?

As a manager or a team leader, you have to identify the team members you want for the big project. Once you select them for the project, make them understand why you want them to work on this specific project. Explain to them the roles they will individually play. Always remember that to gain commitment from team members you have to influence and motivate them thoroughly.

 4.      What are the major deliverables for this big project?

A key part of any project plan is to outline the outcomes. Answering this question is a critical part of your project planning. As a project manager do not overlook or only focus on the result.  Always consider the major deliverables along the way.

 5.      What are the major steps in my project plan?

Start your project first by brainstorming on this question - "what all things I will need to do for this project?" Don't worry that you won't think of all the things at one go - you'll think of more eventually! Get down on paper everything that you can think of first, and then ask the second question - "what are the major steps?" From your big list, you will be able to identify the key steps and then group the other steps "inside" the major steps.

 6.      What can I do to ensure fewer risks and obstacles during the project?

Think about the end of the project for a few minutes. Imagine today what obstacles, stumbling points, and hurdles you must handle for this successful completion. Then take a step back and ask yourself how you can eliminate the obstacles, bridge the roadblocks, and clear the hurdles right now. This is one of the best uses of your time at the start - to take steps to reduce or eliminate these things before they can occur to stall or delay your project.

By thinking through these questions, you can achieve your project goals with much less guesswork and far fewer glitches than you may have experienced in the past. So, best of luck on your upcoming big project!
