Staying mindful when you are working remotely | Jignesh Soni

Remote working is no longer a traditional concept, it is the current work scenario. Due to the epidemic, businesses and offices have resorted to a remote working pattern for more than a year. Now it is more important than ever to practice mindfulness now that the WFH culture has become a way of life.

Here are few mindful tips that you can explore to remain focused and productive during this unprecedented time:

·       Define Your Working Environment - Limit your workspace to a discrete part of your home so that your productivity does not disrupt the lives of other family members and you can focus. Instead of checking emails, voicemails, or texting in front of the TV or spreading work out on the dining table, designate an area as your workspace. If you don't have a separate room, look for a corner of a room that is off from the main area.

·       Pace Yourself - Make a conscious effort to work as much as possible in the present moment. According to studies, having a good work-life balance boosts productivity. Plodding gets you to the finish line on time while still allowing you to enjoy life along the way.

·       Cultivate Self-Compassion - First, put the oxygen mask on yourself. Take note of how you speak to yourself. Instead of berating yourself when you forget something, make a mistake, or fail at a task, show compassion to yourself. Practice pep talks and give yourself the same nurturing support and loving kindness you would give to your best friend. When you're feeling overwhelmed, use nice words to talk yourself down.

·       Unplug and Reenergize - Making sure you spend enough time on things other than productivity is the best prescription for increasing your productivity. Between appointments, use time cushions to breathe, eat a snack, gaze out the window, or stretch and move about. Set aside time to focus on the present moment with yoga, solo walks in nature, or meditation to de-stress your mind.

·       Ask for help when you need it - Delegating tasks is a sign of a self-assured and effective employee. Now that the complete family is at home, make sure your housemates are doing their part and split responsibilities so you can focus on your productivity. Set realistic "lifelines" instead of "deadlines" to prioritize work.

Always remember that staying positive is one of the most important things you can do. Because we are always worried about something, negative thoughts typically lead to greater levels of stress and anxiety. We are all powerless in this scenario, and the best answer is to disconnect from the din of negative thoughts by watching a stand-up comedy or listening to music that will improve your emotions. Always make an effort to veer away from thoughts that will drain you out of steam.
